HTHGS: How to make yourself taste good (written by Dr. Pluhar)
Ask Erika,
I've been getting the news letter for a couple of months now and I like it a lot it is very informative thank you to everyone that contributes to the site. I have a question regarding the icky taste of Semen.  I like giving my boyfriend of 3 years oral stimulation he likes to cum in my mouth. I really don't mind but sometimes we notice he has a very strong odor and taste to his semen than usual it is almost repulsing. he even gets grossed out by the smell. I once read many years ago that certain foods like fruit or beer a couple hours before sex can change the taste of the cum (even in women) to a sweeter taste but I can't remember what they were. Also lately my vagina has been starting to have a light scent of "fish" I wash 2-3 times daily with feminine wash but this scent comes from the inside, usually a few hours after he ejaculates inside of me and lasts sometimes into the next days this didn't start when he first started ejaculating inside it happens when he has that strong smelling thick semen.  I asked my GYN Dr. about douching and he recommend me not to do it because it increases the chances of infections.  So what can we do to change the awful smell of his semen?  Help us please. Please share the question with your colleagues someone might know of some methods. thank you,
Icked out

Dear Icked out,
Thanks for your question.  I'm glad you have found the newsletter helpful and informative.  As for your question about the taste of semen, although there is no scientific data on the subject (that I'm aware of) it may be possible for various foods to influence the taste of body fluids, including semen and vaginal fluids.  You may want to try experimenting with a few foods, such as not eating dairy products and certain veggies such as cauliflower, broccoli, and asparagus to see how that affects the taste.  Foods that have lots of garlic or onion flavor may also affect the taste of semen, as may alcohol, cigarettes, and coffee.   Using a flavored condom or having a breath mint in your mouth could also help take care of taste problems.

In regards to douching, your GYN is right on and good for you for asking him or her about this.  Douches contain harsh chemicals that will interfere with the delicate balance in your vagina, particularly when you are doing it 2-3 times per day.  The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and it is natural to have a slight musky odor (that can change with your menstrual cycle).  The fishy odor, particularly if it is out of the norm for you, might mean that you have an infection such as bacterial vaginosis so I would recommend getting it checked out just to be sure. Good luck and thanks again for your question.

HTHGS: Letter to the editor,
This isn't a question, but it is an opinion.  I too have noticed a difference in the taste of my boyfriend's semen, and find that it takes on a bitter taste after he has had eaten pasta, or anything with Tomato sauce.  Before I dated my boyfriend, I had dated a couple of Italian guys, and found that their semen had a bitter taste also.  I had dated the Italian guys when I was younger and thought that all semen tasted like that, but my current boyfriend has proven this to be false. Now I always ask my boyfriend if he has had Spaggetti recently, before I give him head ,and let him come in my mouth.  It has really helped me to avoid that "unpleasant aftertaste".  Just thought I would share this observation with you.  Thanks.

Our Philosophy sex is like dancing, it changes every time. It depends on culture, atmosphere and mood. Sometimes it is done alone, with a partner or in a group. It can be fast and hard or slow and soft. Sex is a combination of non-verbal negotiation and verbal cues: a scream, a twitch of the toes, or a flush of the face. There is no one 'right' way to move, only what feels good to all those involved.
